What's in a name? Psycho Path wins; Farfrompoopen shows

Farfrompoopen Road, the only road to Constipation Ridge, lost to Divorce Court and Psycho Path, which placed No. 1 in an online poll of the nation's wildest, weirdest and wackiest street names.

Mitsubishi Motors sponsored the poll and more than 2,500 voters cast their ballots.

In first place was Psycho Path in Traverse City, Mich., followed by Heather Highlands, Pa.'s, Divorce Court in second and Tennessee's Farfrompoopen Road in third. Eisenstein said all the roads were verified, although some are private and hard to find.

The complete top 10 list included:

10. Tater Peeler Road in Lebanon, Tenn.

9. The intersection of Count and Basie in Richmond, Va.

8. Shades of Death Road in Warren County, N.J.

7. Unexpected Road in Buena, N.J.

6. Bucket of Blood Street in Holbrook, Ariz.

5. The intersection of Clinton and Fidelity in Houston

4. The intersection of Lonesome and Hardup in Albany, Ga.

3. Farfrompoopen Road in Tennessee (the only road up to Constipation Ridge)

2. Divorce Court in Heather Highlands, Pa.

1. Psycho Path in Traverse City, Mich.

I saw a county road sign once in Texas, at the crossroads of a paved road and a dirt road.

The dirt road was called Our Road, and it led to one house. Probably a 911 requirement that it have a name! :-)

Farfrompoopen Road is not in Tennessee; it is in Arkansas. You can verify that by going to Mitsubishi's Web site to read about the Street Names Contest Winners.

It is amazing how inaccurate information is perpetuated. If you Google Farfrompoopen, you see virtually hundreds of listings placing the street in Tennessee.

Norman, Oklahoma used to have one of my favorite street names: Faerie Queen Lane.
Recently however the President of the University of Oklahoma thought that was an inappropriate name for a street near his campus. So the president, David Boren, an ex-US Senator and an ex-Rhodes Scholar had the lane, named after one of Spenser's greatest works of literature, renamed.
The whole story of Norman's Faerie Queen Lane is a very interesting story, but too long to tell here.

I collect pictures of me with road signs that have "Bear" in their name. I will have to do a blog on those soon. Say, I came looking for those pictures of your bears you promised this week end. Your sight seems Bear-en of them.

AP's San Francisco office made the error of placing Farfrompoopen Road in Tennessee rather than in Arkansas in reporting the story. Now if you Google Farfrompoopen Road, there about about 80,000 entries. I did not look at all of them, but a lot of them that I saw perpetuated the error.

If you look at Mitsubishi's Web site, you will see that Farfrompoopen Road, which came in third, is in Story, Ark. On second thought, it's too bad it did not come in No. 2.
