Saddam is dead

A little over an hour ago Saddam was hanged for crimes against humanity. This is one of those moments in history that we'll not forget.

It's a pity it overshadows the rememberances of former President Gerald Ford, who made his own history being the only man to serve as vice president and president without being elected to either office. His state funeral is tomorrow. It will be interesting to compare and contrast it with the services held for Ronald Reagan.

I saw in the paper someone observing that in most years, Dec. 29, typically a slow-slow news week, would have been the best time for John Edwards to announce his candidacy for prez -- then James Brown died, President Ford died, and Saddam was hanged.

Good thing. Edwards got my vote in the last primary; he said nothing during his announcement this time to get my attention.

Barack Obama, Babeee!

It is indeed a weird news cycle where the death of a U.S. President is the "second" story. But combine it with the other stuff that was going on, and now with New Year's football stuff, and Ford's not truly getting the honor he should.

Maybe Ford is getting more honor than he deserves. If he hadn't pardoned Nixon, maybe President Ford's damn draft dodgeing staff, Rumsfeld and Cheney et al, wouldn't have led the current President to spit on the constitution. They might have been appropriately afraid of prison time. But no, they are not, for they know that what ever happens they will get a pass no matter the treasure or blood they waste.
Ford took the easy way out, took his hit and then got on with "business", rather than cleaning house as he should have.
Ford was more of an Edsel than we know.
We better hope to God the next President has more balls than Gerald Ford did.
